It would be fair to say that lipstick is one of the most powerful tools in a woman’s arsenal.
Unfortunately, get it wrong and it can border on a nightmare. This is the reason today’s guide has been put together, as we take a look at seven ways you can get the most out of your lipstick and really stand out from the crowd.
Method #1 – Boost your nude lipstick
There are plenty of occasions where nude lipstick suffices; but getting this right is easier said than done. One of the main reasons behind this faux pas is because your natural lip color comes straight through the lipstick and ultimately blots the appearance.
Fortunately, there is a very easy way to mitigate this issue. Take a dab of foundation or concealer and apply it on your lips just before you add your lipstick. This is the best way to ensure that your lipstick actually emerges the color that it should be.
Method #2 – Stop straying lipstick
As most of us know, one of the most frustrating parts about lipstick is when it strays out of the lip line. After spending the best part of three hours (OK, maybe an exaggeration) applying your lips, to slightly go out of your lip line is annoying to say the least.
It’s here where a face primer comes into the picture. If you can add this primer to your lips before you even consider your lipstick, you will be amazed at the effect. Suddenly, straying is a thing of the past.
Method #3 – Fixing that lipstick that does stray
Of course, if you have somehow managed to go out of your lip line, it’s time to turn to this next method. Up until now, you’ve probably run into countless dead-ends as you attempt to remove the lipstick that has somehow managed to escape your lips. Fortunately, this solution can save you so much time you won’t believe.
You need to turn to an oil control primer and start to apply a very small amount of this to the strayed marks. You’ll find that the marks suddenly start to vanish; it’s almost like the washing detergent adverts we see on television! Best of all, you don’t need to frantically wipe away at the stray marks.
Method #4 – The power of exfoliation
It would be fair to say that exfoliation has become something of a buzzword in the beauty industry over the last few decades. However, most of those that turn to it do so for the skin and not necessarily the lips.
As you have probably gathered by now, we’re going to recommend that you exfoliate your lips. If you are serious about your lips emerging as smooth, vibrant and hydrated, it doesn’t matter how good the lipstick is if your lips aren’t exfoliated. Dry lips are a recipe for “dull” looking lips, so turn to an exfoliator in a bid to erase such an appearance. If you can turn to an exfoliator containing both sugar and butter, you’re onto a real winner.
Method #5 – Stay on trend with matte lips
If you’ve kept tabs on the beauty magazines right now, you’ll know all about matte lips. This is the style that is fashion right now, but what about those of you who happen to have a shade which isn’t available in a matte finish?
Well, now is the time that we tell you there is a hack available, and you simply need to find a matte blush to create it. Of course, this blush needs to be in a similar shade to your lipstick, otherwise the effect is completely lost. Take your blush, apply it to your lips before gently patting it in. It will gradually start to create the matte look and suffice to say, it’s problem solved.
Method #6 – Perfectly defined lips
We are all in the business to get those perfectly defined lips but like a lot of the points we have mulled over today, it’s certainly a case of easier said than done. This next method really can be summed up as “X marks the spot”. Take a lip pencil and find the highest point of your top lip. Draw down your Cupid’s bow, sticking to the inside, until you reach the lowest part of your upper lip. You then need to repeat the process, but obviously from the other side.
This method creates an X-shape and ultimately makes your Cupid’s bow look completely perfect and defined.
Method #7 – Keep your shade all day, every day
It goes without saying that one of the most frustrating parts about lipstick is when the shade fades over the course of the day.
If this problem affects you, apply your lipstick as normal but start to dab any excess lipstick with a tissue. With a new tissue, separate it so the paper is as thin as can be. Then, put it across your lips, before taking a translucent loose powder and applying. The last step is to add your final layer of lipstick.
This might sound like a long-winded solution, but there is method in the madness. The translucent powder is there to absorb any excess oil that might accumulate through the course of the day and ultimately, sap away the normal color of the lipstick.
